CPND - Seeing people, not problems

Community Projects North Devon

Community Projects North Devon (formerly North Devon Housing Society) works in northern Devon to relieve poverty, homelessness and isolation, and to maximise people’s life chances.  A local charity, the organisation was registered in 1984 as an Industrial and Provident Society, but was originally founded more than 30 years ago.

Northdown LodgeCommunity Projects North Devon today has a range of projects which offer support, care and training for

  • People who are homeless or are threatened with homelessness
  • Those recovering from alcohol and drug problems
  • Those in the community who have additional support needs
  • People with a learning disability

Current Projects include the following:

  • Bridge Project - Supported independent living for those recovering from addiction dependencies. Bridge manages a shared house for people recovering from alcohol and drug problems, and also manages three supported flats for people recovering from alcohol and drug problems.
  • CLASS (Community Living Adult Support Services) - Supported independent living for vulnerable adults in the community. CPND provides floating support for many Learning Disabled people in their own homes. Support is given to the residents based on their own individual needs, and is designed to promote choice and dignity, and maximise independence.
  • Jigsaw Furniture Project - Providing rehabilitation, training and work experience for marginalised groups. Jigsaw offers donated furniture for referred people who do not have furniture. The project offers training in various crafts, including furniture repair and restoration, picture framing, gardening and more, for service users. This may lead to commercially oriented work experience when and where appropriate.
  • Volunteering - CPND offers volunteering opportunities and development throughout all its projects as well as through partner organisations.
  • Northdown Lodge is a residential home for  6 adults with a learning disability. The home is situated in Bideford, and provides a caring and supportive environment which encourages the residents to participate in various activities within the community and to exercise choice.
  • CPND Housing ServicesHousing Services - CPND offers a placement agency which places people in private accommodation, offers bonds, cash and loans for damage deposits and a rent in advance scheme for people who have no cash. There is also a support service which supports vulnerable people in their own homes to prevent homelessness and to provide crisis intervention where tenancies have failed. We work closely with the local authorities in the field of homelessness prevention.
  • Administration - CPND Administration is based in Barnstaple. In 2005 it is entering a new phase of its development, including adopting its new name, Community Projects North Devon, to reflect better our 21st century activities and ideals. The organisation will continue to expand in response to community need. CPND embraces many partnerships, working across a range of areas from both voluntary and statutory backgrounds. We believe that partnerships are the most effective way of delivering services and are always eager to enter discussions to further develop our partnerships, or to enter into new agreements.
