Northdown Lodge is a six bedded, residential home run by Community Projects North Devon. Situated a short walk from Bideford town centre, Northdown Lodge is home to people who have learning disabilities and can present challenging behaviour. Focus on the individual is an important part of our philosophy, where each person’s needs will be met, while encouraging independence in choice, and maximisation of personal development. Long term care is offered to people aged 25-65 years. We strongly believe that people with learning disabilities have the same human value and rights as other people.
Each resident has his or her own private bedroom, which they are welcome to decorate to their own taste, including bringing their own furniture if they wish. All bedrooms are fully centrally heated. There is a communal lounge, where residents can relax or watch TV together, if they wish to do so. Meals are prepared and cooked in the modern kitchen, with a menu choice at every meal. Meals are eaten in the dining room, but residents are welcome to eat in their room if they have a guest.
Northdown Lodge has an open house policy which means family and friends of residents are always welcome and may enjoy a private visit with their relatives.
The home is staffed twenty-four hours a day by a team of trained carers who ensure that the residents enjoy a safe, homely and happy environment.

Community involvement - Residents are encouraged and supported to access their community. Some attend day care activities, and all enjoy social outings to local parks, library, art centre, shops, coffee shops etc. Northdown Lodge proactively seeks to find opportunities for residents to engage with the local community. Learning Disabled people have the same needs as other people for socialisation and for interaction with fellow human beings.
As a result of recent changes in Devon County Council’s policy towards Day Care for Learning Disabled people, Community Projects North Devon began working closely with Bideford Venture, which aims to make up for a shortfall of facilities for people with learning disabilities. With Bideford Venture, CPND is hoping to develop a project which will offer Day Opportunities for the Learning Disabled. Particularly in the North Devon area, there are insufficient activities for this vulnerable group, which means that most of our residents spend all their time together, day in and day out. This - for anyone - is not a healthy or normal situation.
How you can help - Additional funding is essential for us to implement a new project, however. Donations would be welcomed, or please consider putting on a fundraising event to help our Learning Disabled people.
Please contact us directly on 01237 424318 for further information, or Community Projects North Devon Central Administration on 01271 322013.
