CPND - Seeing people, not problems

Community Projects North Devon

Jigsaw Furniture Project
To provide rehabilitation, training and work experience for marginalised groups

The Jigsaw Furniture Project has since its inception in 1982 worked closely with those people in the community who have been marginalised for a variety of reasons, ranging from those with a history of mental illness, those with learning disabilities and individuals recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.

People who have used the project’s services find that they gain in confidence and self worth, improve job and training prospects and develop their social and life/behavioural skills.

Statistics show that the project is making a positive impact on people’s lives. Of the 25 service users who left the project during 2004, 55% went into further training, 31% found employment. Only 7% did not remain in contact. Results for 2005 are expected to be at least as good, if not better.

The Jigsaw Project is a safe and supportive environment in which those who are most vulnerable in our community are able to take the very first steps towards a more fulfilling and independent life. Past beneficiaries have moved on to further training at North Devon College or St. Loyes College in Exeter, and to further voluntary work or to full time employment.

Service users come to the project through referrals from a wide range of agencies, as well as self referrals from individuals wishing to make a change to their lives.

 Opportunities offered include:

  • Furniture repair and restoration
  • French polishing
  • Veneering
  • Carpentry
  • Picture framing
  • Upholstery
  • Gardening (a new project in 2005)

At every stage the trainees are are supported by the project workers and are gradually encouraged to build up their hours and the tasks they undertake at an appropriate rate, through a structured programme or work.

The Jigsaw Project is an integral part of the whole service offered by Community Projects North Devon. It receives regular referrals from other CPND projects, including Housing and Support Services, Bridge Project, and Community Living Adult Support Services (CLASS).

The Jigsaw Project also provides donated furniture to those on low incomes to provide a start in their accommodation.  This service includes the provision of low cost second hand appliances.

How you can help

  • Recycle any unwanted, reusable furniture to the project. This will be passed on to those in the community who find themselves in need. Donating your unwanted furniture also helps to reduce the volume of dumped waste in Devon.
  • Visit our showroom at our newly extended premises in Barnstaple. There is a wide range of beautifully restored furniture, including antiques, all from donated items.
  • Bring us any furniture that you wish to have restored. Our service users will update and renovate your items to the highest standards.
  • We are also able to create hand crafted items to customer’s specifications, thanks to a well equipped workshop.
  • Give us your time. Volunteers are always welcomed and their input greatly valued.
  • Make a donation, or hold a fundraising event for this project.

Visitors to CPND projects are welcomed. Please call us directly on 01271 327564 or call our Central Administration on 01271 322013.
